Whangarei Heads offers all the water based activities you can think of, as it consists of both harbour and coast. There are calm harbour beaches as well as surf beaches at Ocean Beach and Pataua.

Ocean Beach

At the end of the Whangarei Heads Road lies the powerful Pacific sweep of Ocean Beach. After the tranquility of the inner harbour coves, Ocean Beach has a new energy with its often powerful surf and awesome views.

With a climate which is sub-tropical, summer temperatures often reach around the 30C+ mark. This little surfer paradise is 800 meters wide, the sand white and powdery, and with minimal shade, can get very hot on an average mid summer day.

The lifeguard’s website says: ‘It's a non-typical New Zealand exposed East Coast, postcard picture perfect beach, raw, with strong rips and deceptively quick side currents provided for our entertainment. The body surfing's great, patrolling proactive, and we love it!’
