Water Based Activities

Whangarei Heads has all the water based activities you can think of, as it consists of both harbour and coast. There are calm harbour beaches as well as large surf beaches at Ocean Beach and Pataua. Fishing, waterskiing, windsurfing, kayaking, diving, surfing and of course swimming can all be enjoyed. There is also a Marine Reserve.

Pacific Coast Kayaks

Based in Onerahi very close to the airport. We are able to do guided expeditions in both the Inner and Outer Harbour areas. There is great variety. In the Inner harbour lies Matakohe Island which has a long history of Maori and European occupation and where you can explore the old cement works ruins, Maori middens and pa site. Kiwis have now been introduced to the island. Nearby is a marine reserve at Waikaraka ( mangrove forest area ). Further out is another marine reserve at Motukaroro Island near Reotahi which is interesting to snorkel.

Hiring, freedom hires, guided trips and instruction are all offered.
